Singapore Red Cross Keeps Up Tsunami Relief Efforts
This is the latest batch of relief supplies sent by Singapore Red Cross to affected areas. Considerable relief supplies have already been sent to Banda Aceh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Among these were two Red Cross ambulances which were sent to Aceh at the request of the Indonesian Red Cross.
In addition, a 21-man Singapore Red Cross Medical Relief Mission is currently
operating in Trincommalee, Sri Lanka. The team include medical volunteers from various health clusters in Singapore and other Singapore Red Cross volunteers. It is headed by Dr Leong Seong Kwok, Manager (Services) of the Singapore Red Cross. They brought with them more than S$500,000 worth of medical and other relief supplies.
Another medical relief team will be leaving shortly for Meulaboh, Aceh. The Singapore Red Cross has plans to deploy another medical team if there is a need. Each team will operate for up to a month at each location. Team members will be rotated to ensure continuity..
The Singapore Red Cross has already contributed S$2 million to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for their immediate relief efforts in all affected areas. This is apart from the S$100,000 which Singapore Red Cross has contributed to the Indonesian Red Cross for its relief efforts.
Apart from immediate relief, the Singapore Red Cross will be participating in the forthcoming reconstruction of the affected communities. Much of the funds donated to the Singapore Red Cross for the tsunami victims will be utilised for this purpose.
